This podcast draws on the special edition of the Residential Aged Care Communiqué published in April 2020 examining the COVID-19 pandemic on aged care. COVID-19 has changed the world as we know it and the challenges ahead for nursing homes is profound. We have all seen the distressing pictures from Spain where nursing homes were abandoned, and the military had to move in to provide the support. The devastation and deaths of older people living in nursing homes was evident throughout the world in high income countries with robust health systems such as France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Canada and United States of America.
As a sector we are amazingly robust in our capacity to care, problem solve and work together. We need those qualities now more than ever. In this podcast we present a sobering case report from the United States of America, the aspects of aged care that are not so obvious to consider in the COVID-19 pandemic, and four potential scenarios that for many across the world have become a reality to consider in planning a response for nursing homes.
